Answer: Yes the download MOD will work with an installed CH MOD, because the MOD will work completely with own files.
Just some few global files must be modded, like the includes/constants.php, includes/functions.php or language files...

Which CH MOD do you use? The 2.1.x???

Oh yes, well, the CH MOD 2.1.x replaces many standard functions, too
Fine, more incompatibilities with one more standard phpBB2 MOD ...

With download mod 5.2.2, the mod work fine but not 5.3.0

Again:
The function smilies_pass may be replaces by the CH MOD with another function, so the MOD have trouble with this.
I've never analyse the CH MOD since 2.1.0, so I can't really help here with fixes.
So I ask you to look for the function calls to format the smilies.
I think, in the bbcode.php or the "new" viewtopic.php you can find the calls which must be inserted in the files from the Download MOD, too...
